The trunk reaches a diameter of 20 cm and it grows slowly. The young plants are few centimeters tall but the old ones (over 50 years old) it can reach 6-7 meters.

The leaves are brilliant green color and are 1.5 meters long; they are penned, lightly curved, shiny and pointed. The single leaves, rigid and thin, are 8-18 cm long; the once that are close to the trunk turn into spine form shape. The younger leaves grow in springtime at the top of the trunk forming large groups and when it needs the trunk gathers them and they are covered by a dense hair protection. In the turn of a few days they open and the quickly turn into mature leaves. [Wikipedia]
